ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell University campus police and local law enforcement will increase patrols near the Ithaca Gorge after two students died in separate incidents over the holiday weekend.

Ithaca police say a body was spotted in Fall Creek gorge early Saturday afternoon and was later recovered by emergency crews. University officials say the victim was an international student visiting Cornell for the summer.

Authorities say the person apparently fell while walking off-trail along the gorge. The person’s name hasn’t been released.

Around 4 p.m. Saturday, emergency crews returned to the gorge after a man was reported missing while swimming near Ithaca Falls. Officials say a state police dive team later recovered the body of 21-year-old Nathaniel Rand of New York City, who would have been entering his senior year.

Swimming is prohibited in the creek.
