Buyers now have the chance to own an architecturally-designed apartment in Melbourne’s iconic Bible House building on Flinders Lane.

Built in 1898 by city planner and architect Frank Stapley, the heritage-listed building was later purchased by the British Foreign Society in 1911.

About 50,000 bibles were sold from the Bible House each year, hence the name it’s now known by.

Looking for the perfect entry-level investment property?

The light-filled pad at No. 301/241 was designed by celebrated architect Clare Cousins, who reimagined the tight 75sq m space into a contemporary, family-friendly abode — making use of every nook and cranny.

“Honestly, it’s the most iconic part of Flinders Lane,” Belle Property Melbourne partner and auctioneer Sam Fenna said.

“What I think is so amazing is how light and bright it is all day … you don’t really get that in city apartments, particularly in heritage-listed buildings.”

Three of the apartment’s walls feature 10 arched windows, with vaulted 3.8m-high ceilings reminiscent of its period build.

The 10-year-old renovation saw the inclusion of a second bedroom, perfect for children or as a study, which sits behind the main bedroom nook.

There’s also a mezzanine storage or sitting area, accessed via a ladder, in addition to plywood finishes, pinewood flooring and a terrazzo tiled bathroom.

Plus, the open-plan kitchen is fitted with Miele appliances and opens out onto a balcony overlooking Scott Alley.

Mr Fenna said that the vendors had come and gone over the years but had “always kept it as a Melbourne pad”.

With a young child in tow, the couple are now looking for something a bit bigger.

Mr Fenna added that he had already received a number of inquiries about the two-bedroom property, including a few buyers who had been “sitting back” while searching for something special.

“(They’re) professional couples and also a few buyers who left the city during the pandemic and are looking to come back,” he said.

The Bible House apartment has been listed with an $820,000-$880,000 price guide ahead of its October 22 auction.
