The U.S. franchise of RuPaul’s Drag Race took quite some time to openly include transgender drag queens. A few drag artists came out during the show’s filming, but some off-color comments from RuPaul discouraged many non-cisgender male drag performers from entering the show. However, RuPaul’s Drag Race queen Gia Gunn recently took credit for “opening doors” for future transgender contestants. Fans and fellow queens are clapping back.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 14 includes transgender drag queens

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 14 just hit television screens around the world in a huge way. The cast brings a diverse group of talented performers with a variety of skills. Season 14 is doing a split-premiere, meaning that its 14 queens are divided into two premieres. Each of the first two episodes features 7 queens, respectively.

The first premiere of season 14 introduces two openly-transgender queens with Kerri Colby and Kornbread “The Snack” Jeté. They both performed rather well on the first episode of the newest season. As a result, this is creating more trans visibility, although they aren’t the first trans folks on the U.S. iteration of the show. Kylie Sonique Love, Peppermint, and Gottmik are a few other trans drag queen competitors.

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 6 contestant Gia Gunn takes credit for ‘opening doors’ for other transgender queens

So happy to see a trans person on an actual season of drag race ?️‍⚧️ The doors that I’ve opened…

— Gia Gunn (@GiaGunn) January 8, 2022

Gia originally starred on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 6, but she also returned for All Stars 4. She also competed on the Chilean spinoff titled The Switch Drag Race, where she was a runner-up. Her inclusion on All Stars 4 made her the first trans contestant on the spinoff show, although she wasn’t the first trans queen on the main franchise show.

Gia took to Twitter to express her joy seeing trans representation on RuPaul’s Drag Race. She wrote, “So happy to see a trans person on an actual season of drag race. The doors I’ve opened … ”

The RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant previously caused controversy on Twitter. She claimed that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic was a hoax and criticized mask-wearing policies. As a result, the show’s fans and her fellow queens clapped back. This list includes Mrs. Kasha Davis, Bianca Del Rio, and Farrah Moan.

Queens and fans are calling Gia Gunn out

Thank you to our lord and savior Gia Christ

— Kornbread “Korngenial ” Jeté (@kornbreadTMFS) January 10, 2022

Several RuPaul’s Drag Race fans responded to Gia’s message with pictures of previous trans and non-binary queens that came before her. Some Twitter users asked the drag queen to log off Twitter before her posts dig her into a deeper hole of trouble.

Season 13 runner-up Gottmik responded, “I love my fake season.” Gia commented in return, “Let me clarify … trans WOMEN,” although that didn’t make the situation any better.

Season 9 runner-up Peppermint tweeted, “um okay girl hahaha,” which fans assume is a response to Gia’s post.

Season 14 contestant Kornbread tweeted, “Waiting for Gia to tweet about how she opened the doors for MJ Rodriguez to win a Golden Globe all because she saw one on the front of a Geography book in middle school.” She also responded to Kerri’s tweet about “trans excellence” with the message, “Thank you to our lord and savior Gia Christ.”

The fans are loving all of the shady responses that queens are giving Gia’s tweet.
