Royal Ascot Highlights

Day 1

We kick off the Royal Ascot meeting with the first Grade 1 of the week, the Queen Anne Stakes over 1 mile. The betting on The Queen Anne is usually very tight at the top of the market because you have the battle-hardened and talented 4-year-olds going up against last season top 2-year-old’s. Who will come out on top this year?

Day 2

The Queens Vase is the race that some of the future Gold Cup horses will be aimed for in the hope that they will be back next year with their dream still in tack. Recent winners include the classy Kew Gardens, former Gold Cup winner and The Queen owned Estimate, and current Triple Crown winner Stradivarius. This is one of the best-contested races of the week and always throws up an extremely exciting finish.

Day 3

The highlight of day 3 and for some the week, the Ascot Gold Cup is the ultimate test for any staying horse on the flat. You might have a top class horse over 1 mile 4 furlongs but can he handle the step up to 2 miles 4 furlongs. You need a horse with talent, class and staying power, but most importantly they need to have guts and the will to win.

In 2018 we saw Stradivarius take this in his quest to become the first ever Triple Crown winner, which he duly went on to achieve.

Day 4

We kick off the day with the Albany Stakes over 6 furlongs. First introduced to Royal Ascot in 2002, the Albany Stakes is a race for two-year-old fillies and provides useful pointers to some of the leading two-year-old fillies for the remainder of the season and into the following season. There have been big price winners in the betting in recent years so my advice is don’t let the horses big price put you off.

Day 5

The final day of Royal Ascot kicks off with the 7 furlongs listed Chesham Stakes. The Chesham Stakes open to horses aged two years, but whose sires have won over a distance of 1 mile 2 furlongs in their own racing careers. A trainer I would follow in this race would be Aiden O Brian as he has won it 2 out of the last 3 years and his crop of three-year-old’s seem to be getting better and better as the season goes on.
