Virgil van Dijk is a Dutch professional footballer. He plays as a centre-back for Premier League club Liverpool and captains the Netherlands national team. He has also played for Groningen, Celtic, and Southampton. He holds the world record transfer fee for a defender at £75 million.

Virgil is the son of Hellen Chin Fo Sieeuw and Ron Van Dijk. His father is Dutch and his mother is from Suriname. He was raised in Kesteren, Haagse Beemden district, Breda. Virgil is married to Rike Nooitgedagt, with whom he has four children.

Virgil’s maternal great-grandfather was Chin Fo Sieeuw (陈火秀), a Chinese emigrant, from Guangdong to Suriname, around 1920.
