According to court records, Gobeze went to the Federal High Court in Addis Abeba on May 9 and 10, when police accused him of engaging in terrorism and serving as the head of an unnamed extremist group’s media propaganda section.

Authorities were unable to pinpoint any specific content or actions that gave rise to that claim. Gobeze is scheduled to appear in court on May 24 after the judge granted the police an additional 14 days to keep him for questioning.

An Interpol spokesman told CPJ via email that the agency did not have any information on Gobeze in its records and pointed out that it did not have the authority to detain or deport anyone.

Gobeze’s report on the current turmoil in the Amhara regional state following the demobilization of the Amhara State Special Forces was the main subject of his detention.

Gobeze and 46 other people were charged with participating in terrorism in the Amhara regional state, according to a statement released on April 30 by the security task force.

The reporter had already been arrested by the authorities for more than a week in May 2022 and for more than two months later in the same year.
